The |axons| are the long ~processes~ of the neuron which carry ~nerve~ impulses from the body of the neuron to the |synapse|. The |axons| are distinguished from the |dendrites|, which carry ~nerve~ impulses toward the body of the neuron. The |axon| terminals allow the ~nerve~ impulses to pass through a synaptic connection into another neuron, for the continuous transmission of an impulse, or into a ~nerve~-muscle junction, to cause |contraction| of the muscle tissue. Other types of peripheral ~nerve~ terminals include vascular, articular, and cutaneous endings.
